Handy surfs past PC

The home computer could soon be replaced by the smartphone as the most important platform for internet surfing.

This is the main conclusion of a Gartner study which predicts that as early as 2013 there will be more smartphones in use world-wide than home computers. There will be an estimated 1.78 billion PCs and 1.82 billion mobile phones with internet access. This forecast is supported by, among other things, observations of the current trend.

In 2009 there were already 34% more mobile telepho-nes used for internet activities than in 2008; the num-ber of mobile users rose from 42.5 million to 56.9 million. Experts are therefore advising website opera-tors to meet the requirements of mobile surfers as soon as possible. The loading speed of the homepage is critical here, since the user would want to obtain information en route quickly and simply. There are already useful tools for designing  your own portal in an appropriate way, enabling providers to recognise automatically if users are surfing by mobile, for example.
